In the field of biochemistry there are many professionals who are very admirable, but I have always felt connected to women who are part of science, who have made great discoveries and advances in their field. Jennifer Doudna is a very important scientist whom I admire for her great work, specifically for her work in the development of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology. This technology has revolutionized the field of genetics and has the potential to cure genetic diseases and improve agriculture. In addition to her scientific achievements, Doudna is a leader in public discussion of the ethical implications of genome editing for human biology and societies, and advocates for thoughtful approaches to the development of policies around the safe use of CRISPR technology. My favorite picture

Although it's difficult to choose a favorite photo, I think this one deserves the spot. It was summer 2023, and my family and I were on vacation in a landscape in Curacautin in the South of Chile. One morning, I woke up and saw a beautiful sunrise. The sky was a brilliant blue, the sunlight illuminated the cordillera de las andes, the trees, and the green grass. And you cant appreciate from the photo but there was a beautiful bird song. As I admired the beautiful landscape, I couldn't help but take this beautiful photo, which captures the essence of summer in the south. That's why it's my favorite photo. It reminds me of the best moments of summer, the time with my family, and the calm and peace that the south of Chile provides.  With this photo, I remind myself that it's important to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us and to take care of it.

The washing machine

In today’s blog, I’ll tell you about my favorite technological artifact, the washing machine. That metal thing saves us a lot of time and allows us to perform more than one task at a time.  It is my favorite technological device since without it we would have to spend a lot of time on clothes, between wetting them, scrubbing them, and rinsing them to get the detergent well, with each garment. Instead, with the washing machine, you just need to select a lot of clothes, put it in the washing machine, put some detergent on it, press some buttons, and that's it, between 40 and 45 minutes your clothes will be clean. And think that in those 40 minutes, you can be doing something else and not be staring at the washing machine, as I am while I am writing this blog my clothes are washing.  For these reasons, I recommend you use the washing machine or if you already use one, start to appreciate it more, because it makes the work we must do much easier.

How did I get here...

Since I was a little girl, I've been a curious person who would like to know all things about the world where we live. I've always been interested in the conformation and functions of plants, animals and stars. In fact, my dream job was to study the universe and their galaxys. But I thought that for that job I had to travel to outer space and I was too scared  to be away from my family for a long time. As time passed, my curiosity for the universe was losing interest  and I started to like plants and animals more. Even, I had the necessity to understand their structure and their physiology. The idea of watching myself in a lab doing an investigation caught my attention. But I wasn’t sure what career would fit more with my interests, so I decided to join Bachillerato to see if I could clear up my ideas. Hi everyone, my name is Valentina Figueroa Segura. I am a biochemistry’s student and these are some things about me.   I am twenty years old, I am a capricorn and I was born and brought up in Santiago de Chile. I live in a house with my mother, my father, my sister and my little dog Polo. I enjoy passing time in my home alone listening to music with my dog. I like the summer, especially the water and swimming, no matter if is in a pool, a river, a lake, the ocean or if the water is very cold. I like reading, mostly fantasy and science fiction books. I like watching series and movies, some of my favorites are Friend’s serie and the movie Brother Bear. And I am a big fan of Taylor Swift, I hope someday I can meet her in person and tell her that I love her 💗.
